One such example at Stonewater, one of the UK’s leading housing providers, is Mandy Burnham, who has dedicated the last five years to supporting residents as a Coach at an independent living scheme in Swindon.
Her passion for creating a supportive and nurturing environment is evident in the progress and achievements of the 24 customers she works with. These individuals face various challenges, but with Mandy and Stonewater’s support, they are empowered to live independently, maximize their potential, and actively contribute to their local community.
Supporting customers to independence
Mandy’s role is multifaceted, ranging from organising weekly activities to offering one-on-one support to customers. The Bow Court scheme provides not only a safe space but also a foundation for growth. Residents here are encouraged to be the best they can be, and Mandy plays a critical role in this process.
Weekly activities provide residents with opportunities for socialisation, skill development, and creative expression. However, Mandy’s work goes far beyond organising events; it’s about creating a nurturing environment where every individual can thrive at their own pace.
“Each customer is on a unique journey towards independence,” says Mandy. “Some are further along than others, but what’s important is that they all have the opportunity to progress in a way that suits them best. Our job is to support them, help them build confidence, and encourage them to contribute to their local community. Everyone deserves the chance to flourish, and that’s what we strive to provide here.”
Overcoming challenges
For some customers, the aspiration of working or volunteering has become a reality. Six customers are currently employed, while 11 others actively volunteer within the community. These roles provide them with a sense of purpose and belonging, helping them to build connections beyond the confines of the scheme.
However, the journey to independence is not without its challenges. Many customers still face barriers that make it difficult to fully participate in wider society.
“We work hard to break down barriers and stigma for customers,” explains Mandy. “But there are systemic issues, like time restricted bus passes, which create additional hurdles. Customers already face enough challenges; we need to remove these barriers to help them fully integrate into society. Everyone should have equal access to opportunities, whether it’s getting to work or participating in community events.”
Creating an inclusive society
At the core of the Stonewater scheme is the belief in an inclusive society where everyone, regardless of their abilities, has the chance to thrive. Mandy and her team understand that each customer is at a different level of their independence journey, and they tailor their support accordingly. For some, this means helping them gain employment; for others, it’s simply offering a supportive environment where they can build confidence and learn new skills.
The positive impact of this approach is evident in the customers’ lives. By empowering them to live as independently as possible, Mandy and her team are helping to create a community of active citizens who contribute to their local area. This in turn challenges societal perceptions and fosters greater inclusion for people with additional needs.
“An inclusive society is one where everyone can thrive and flourish,” says Mandy. “Customers at Bow Court, and our other supported living schemes, have so much to offer, and it’s our responsibility to make sure they have the opportunities to show it. That’s what makes campaigns like Starts at Home so important – they shine a light on the incredible work being done and the difference it can make in people’s lives.”
